Now, I still don’t know where those videos I downloaded using youtube-dl as root did end up. So the whole problem of not being able to find the video downloads was because I was using youtube-dl as root rather than user and, as a result, the downloads were not going into my home directory. Then when I opened the home directory I could see the icon representing the video, and when I clicked on the icon it played perfectly. Today when I opened the shell as user and called up youtube-dl the video landed in my home directory, and I found it was there by using the “ls” command you suggested. I realize now that my problem was in calling up youtube-dl as root rather than as user. Your reply allowed me to realize that I was making something very simple very hard for myself. Thus when you call youtube-dl, it will by default create the files in the directory where “you are”. Hello أهلا Χαίρετε Здравствуйте show all files in the directory unicode relative to my working directory /home/henk/test. ![]() Thus just a lsĪ::b ctest oo plaatje red sparkz stdout unicode Лшадсщīestanden file photos ps script spsp sw urlmetraar नमस्तेĬhars lönekonto phptest py sp stderr t-chown show the files in my working directory. Most often you cd to the place where you want to do some “work” (like downloading youtube files) because then you have to type less and many applications/tools will use that working directory by default to make all things easier. Thus you always know “where you are”.Īll relative paths (those that do not start with a /) are relative to the working directory. It is by default shown in your shell prompt: cd the first prompt it is ~ (which is short for my home directory /home/henk) and after the cd to test it is ~/test. ![]() When you start a login shell, it is your home directory. It is often expressed as “the place where you are (in the directory tree)”. “Working directory” is something of the shell. Pardon my profound ignorance, but which is the “working directory” you refer to as the default destination of the output files (downloads)? I usually just bookmark video’s if I am likely to want to view them again so not much of a problem for me really. )Thought this was worth mentioning in case some one else tries it and has the same problem. The extra stream seems to be down to the plugin as the problem disappeared when I disabled it. I could mute either and the sound was fine. My usual one and one labelled firefox stream. After some head scratching that didn’t cure the problem I opened pulses volume control. I couldn’t understand a word that was being said. A few days later I just wanted to watch a couple of video’s and the sound was being played twice with a delay between the 2 streams. It seemed perfectly ok when I tried it and saved video’s. I had a strange problem with the mozilla plug in. I set it up so that it shouldn’t need that and it still wouldn’t work. Wouldn’t work for me and I didn’t fancy giving it privileges via apparmor. There is also another famous one on firefox’s site. )Actually I don’t use one but was interested having seen your post so installed it. They provide a binary for it on there site and it can be put into any directory you want so it doesn’t mess up dependencies etc. Given the latest version of ffmpeg it will merge these for you. An alternative if you use firefox etc instead. I use one with Firefox that seems to work well from mozilla. I was directed to youtube-dl and it works so far. Unfortunately they all seem to say that they won’t work with YouTube. If you go to extensions in Chromium and then get more and search video downloader some should pop up.
